Have you found your tribe?
As an artist, we start out exploring what we like, what we don’t, what we are good at and what needs more finesse… but do we find ourselves as a loner or part of a group of people. Sometimes we need both; alone time to dig deep into our creativity but also community and a sense of belonging to help grow, evolve and collaborate ideas and techniques with others who enjoy and appreciate the art form.
But here is a big question to consider…. Have you found your Tribe? A person or group of people you can be truly authentic with, the true you without any shame or judgement. Your safe people (who will also be honest with you to enable you to be the best version of yourself?).
Here is my personal take on this… let me know if you can relate or if you’re still striving to reach that point.
I always thought being liked and having lots of people surrounding me for either support or assurance was a true sign of being successful. Being part of the right people to help navigate through life. Being appreciated. Being as good as I can be.
I was so wrong.
Have I been used by people so they can progress their career? Yes. Have I confided in people about creative ideas and they have gone ahead, done it themselves and claimed originality? Yes. Did I think that having hundreds of friends was uplifting and genuine? Yes. Even though I’ve experienced this all does this put me off making new friends, or sharing ideas? Absolutely not. I’ve always said that there is enough space for everyone. I really like to champion art and creativity in everyone. If they do wrong by others, that’s really for them to have a conscience and deal with any consequences. But what does it mean about finding your tribe?
For me personally it’s:
– being able to be your authentic self without judgement
– having a safe space to be vulnerable
– sharing ideas and concepts in full transparency
– having support when you really need it
– sharing in peoples successes and cheering them on
– sharing knowledge and experience without expecting anything in return
– they get you. You are unique and deserve to be treated with respect and kindness because you are you
– able to tell the truth or share perspectives without fear of being offended
Our Tribe can be a person or a group of people who are so different to ourselves. We don’t have to share all the same interests or beliefs. It’s just a connection you have with that person or people that just fits or feels right. And our Tribe can and will change over time. We all grow and evolve as people and artists. Hopefully the Tribe we are part of grows and evolves with us, but it’s ok to also regroup.
Just be sure that you’re surrounded by the right people, the right community, for the right reasons. You be you and everything will fall into place, because that’s how it’s truly meant to be.
